Health surveys show that many developed countries are facing kidney problems along with other health problems that may co-exist with it. In the United States, kidney diseases are growing to be a public health burden as it steadily increases in number, according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearing house (NKUDIC), with about one in every 10 adults having chronic kidney disease (CKD). Caring for one’s kidneys is not only the responsibility of health care providers, one needs to learn how to keep the kidneys healthy.
Men and women are at risk of developing kidney diseases due to the following factors – age, race, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and family history of kidney problems. These tips on keeping the kidneys healthy may be used by men and women alike who are at high risk of developing kidney problems. The National Kidney Disease Education Program shares the following ways in keeping the kidneys healthy:
- Keep a healthy blood pressure. The blood pressure levels are also being regulated by the kidneys. Blood pressure levels may vary depending on age and gender but the usual is below 120/80. An achievable blood pressure level may be suggested by health care providers and it may be maintained through proper diet and medications.
- Keep the salt to a minimum. Fluid retention is influenced by the slat levels in the body. For those who are at risk of kidney problems, this might become a problem as the kidney will have more fluids to filter.
- Use the medications only as directed by the health care provider. Most medications directly affect the kidneys as they are excreted from the body through urine.
- Exercise regularly. It may be helpful in keeping the whole body healthy and not just the kidneys.
- Keep an appropriate body weight. Kidney problems are common among obese and we overweight individuals.
- Avoid or limit alcohol intake. Damage to the kidneys are often caused by too much alcohol in the body. Liver problems are also common with people who have drinking problems.
- Choose to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid smoking cigarettes. Kidney damage is often exacerbated because of smoking.
- Eating too much causes the cholesterol level and blood sugar to rise up.
Having healthy kidneys is achievable as long as the person is informed of the dos and don’ts, health experts say.
